Surrounded by History - Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland If you're planning a visit to Philadelphia, you may find yourself close to some other areas of historical interest. Just a short drive north of the city, near King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, the Valley Forge National Historic Park lets you see the all-important staging area for General George Washington's Continental Army during the winter of 1777-1778. An hour to the west, Lancaster County attracts visitors wishing to experience the quaint simplicity of the Pennsylvania Dutch settlers. The port city of Baltimore connects Maryland to America's revolutionary past with its Flag House and Star-Spangled Banner Museum. It's the home of Mary Pickersgill, the seamstress who made the flag that flew over Baltimore's Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key's creation of our national anthem during the war of 1812. Civil War buffs will find Baltimore's USS Constellation Museum to their liking. Christened back in 1854, it's the last all-sail warship built by the U.S. Navy. Home of Washington and Jefferson, Virginia's rich history pre-dates the revolutionary era, going all the way back to Jamestown, the first permanent English colony. Midway between Richmond and Virginia Beach just a few hours south of D.C., this area is also home to tourist-friendly Colonial Williamsburg and the famous Yorktown battlefield, where the surrender of Cornwallis helped cement the Continental Army's victory over the British. No matter which area you choose to visit, Motel 6 will help make sure you don't surrender too much of your hard-earned cash on lodging. |
